Before introducing Carla, I read into how housing was done at Indiana University and I learned that some single rooms, which previously shared half-baths with adjoining single rooms, had been rebuilt to have their own bathrooms in order to help accommodate transgender students who felt most comfortable living in their own space.  

That is Carla’s situation.  She has the single room adjoining Ruth’s single room, and both rooms currently have their own half-bath rather than sharing.  

I had not considered the angle of being in a single room might be done because of coercion by the school due to money-grubbing cost reasons.  For what it’s worth, Carla’s parents are pretty damn wealthy so cost for them is not an issue, and Carla would prefer to have her own room anyway because other people are dumb.
