The only way someone could say "I don't believe Sal" is if we had seen a huge amount of their childhood before this to back up Walky's original claim. HOWEVER, even THEN if those flashbacks were from Walky's POV and if Walky was an unreliable narrator (which he would be), then that still wouldn't disprove what Sal has said. But another part of this is that we're often willing to dismiss the validity of someone else's point of view if it's not like ours, which is why empathy is important.

The funny thing is, Walky’s been shown to be much more deceptive than Sal.  He hides his feelings from everyone and will outright lie about them to protect himself.  But where are the people angrily challenging his assertion that everything’s fine?  Why are people only angry about what Sal said?
