I think the whole "Disbelieving racism towards your children" thing comes from two areas. The first being it's not something that's brought up in fiction, DoA is the first story I've read that mentions it. The second is aside from her dad saying she looks pretty with straight hair, there's nothing to support Sal's claims that it's a race issue, just that Walky is favoured. If you take out Sal's outburst I could still make a sexism case (More value placed on the son) but not a racism one.

Let’s take all of the evidence off the table.  Let’s forget for one second whether there’s anything for or against what Sal said.  

Why can’t we take Sal at her word?  Why is what Sal said so hard to believe?  Why do we only believe her after being presented piles of evidence?  Is she a known liar?  "There’s nothing to support Sal’s claims except, you know, Sal’s claim about actions done towards her HER ENTIRE LIFE" sure treats Sal like shit, don’t it?  

Why are people okay with doing this?
