A second limited edition (of 50) screen print I did for the “Memes” show featuring over 100 artists at Gallery 1988, Melrose. Show opens tomorrow, Friday 4th 7-10PM and all of the work will appear on the website on Saturday. Best times.
Around Valentine’s Day in the US and UK, these things called candy hearts (or conversation hearts or sweethearts) appear: small and sugary, bearing a simple, short Valentine’s message. There are only room for a few characters, so they read something like “LOVE YOU” or “CALL ME” or “BE MINE”.
I collected all the genuine heart messages I could find, and then gave them to a learning algorithm called a neural network. Given a set of data, a neural network will learn the patterns that let it imitate the original data - although its imitation is sometimes imperfect. The candy heart messages it produced… well, you be the judge.
The neural net did produce some that would pass for - and arguably improve upon - the standard messages.
DEAR ME MY MY LOVE BOT CUTE KISS MY BEAR LOVE BUN
Others were in the same spirit, but perhaps not quite as effective.
YOU A LOVE AM GOOD YOU ARE BABE ME MY <3 YOU ARE IT HEART ME SWEET PEAR COOL CUD FANCY MY HERO
Others were, um, strange. I don’t know what they mean, but some of them might work on me.
ALL HOVER OOG LOVE TEAM BEAR TIME HUG PIN A FACE YOU’RE ME SWOOL MAT BOG LOVE I HONKER HOW COT BEAR WIG FANG BE A GOOL TWEET UP BAT WIRLY OOT I WANDER TIME STAR
These will probably not be one of the standard messages anytime soon.
STANK LOVE SWEAT POO LOVE 2000 HOGSYEA HOLE HOW U HOT YOU ARE BOA CHERT FACE LICK SWEAT PEAR LOO GIN YOU A GOO LOOK BIG YOU ARE BAG U HACK
There was yet another category of message, a category you might be able to predict given the prevalence of four-letter words in the original dataset. The neural network thought of some nice new four-letter words to use. Unfortunately, some of those words already had other meanings. Let’s just say that the overall effect was surprisingly suggestive. Fill out the form here and I’ll send them to you.
Also, if you need more love help from the neural network, check out the pick up lines it wrote.
My submission for a certain upcoming art show. :p (See previous post.)
I wanted to draw a scene that somehow showed the essence of the series, that these people meet through chance (and a desire to improve their Spanish) and end up having this huge impact on each other. I love that about Community, it’s one of those shows with a big heart.
Oh man… You guys know those “How to Draw…” books by Christopher Hart? I think we all do. If you’re unfamiliar, there are a bevy of books out there, across all spectrums of art that one might want to learn about, that this guy Chris Hart goes around and collects artists to contribute to. Mr. Hart is not a terrible artist, but he’s not as polished as the talent he gathers for these books, lacking a style of his own and foregoing a sort of deeper knowledge of his subject that artists acquire only after specializing in their medium, style, and application. Again, he’s not terrible, and versatility is an admirable trait in the illustration world, but sometimes the lessons he teaches in these books leave something to be desired. See image above for a prime example of this.
Okay, onto the bigger picture… This week, Ryan Estrada posted this:
Coran Stone cartoons only exist on our fantasy lineup of animation channels. But you probably already know that. Last year, Stone’s ThunderCats and Super Mario Bros. art had us hooked with his soft color palette and happy facial expressions. This year he went even deeper, however, showing us such eyeball-shocking concepts as a hypothetical Inspector Gadget, Mega Man, RoboCop and Iron Man team-up.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Transformers fans! Before the deluge of Toy Fair news begins, let’s take a moment to celebrate love in the Transformers universe with a few of the most famous romances - and a few of the memorably more one-sided ones, too! But this is only a small list - reblog and tell us some of YOUR favourite Transformer pairings!
Since I’ve been blogging Headmasters scenes, let’s have a look back at some of my favorite romantic and not at all creepy or just plain wrong moments from that series…
