The One In Which Alicia Reviews Batgirl #1
Yes, I bought it. Before anyone goes off on me, or dares to think me a hypocrite, I am going to do something that I don’t really need to do, and that is explain myself.
I am 23 years old, and was born with spina-bifida. As such, I have been in a wheelchair my whole life. Not “wheelchair bound” or “confined to a wheelchair”; just, in a wheelchair. As such, as I’m sure my followers who actually pay attention to me (though I’m not sure why anyone would, really), I was heart-broken when I found out about what DC decided to do with Barbara Gordon. The lack of Oracle is, to this day, a gaping hole in me, one that still aches when aggravated even the slightest of bits. And, yes, I still feel that what DC has done is extremely problematic, though I do think they’re learning their lesson with this particular subject.
However, if there is one thing I have never done, that is to blame Gail Simone. On the contrary, it was the fact that she agreed to write for this that gave me hope in this series at all. Why, while it still hurts like hell, I was able to cope with the fact that this has happened, but that there could still be hope. With Miss Gail (I’m from Georgia, and that’s how we refer to grown-ups. Yes, I’m 23. Shut up.) behind the wheel, who is always so vocal and open with her fans, I feel safe, and though I’ve been anxious to see just how things are handled with this now that we’re pass the point of no return, so to speak, I still feel like my hopes are in good hands.
Now, today I made the two purchases from DC that I will be, and those were Batgirl #1, and Static Shock #1. I haven’t read Static Shock yet, but boy am I excited to!!
Under the cut, however, I will highlight my opinions on Batgirl #1. So… Don’t click the link if you don’t want spoilers!

He’s an Objectivist AND he gets Social Security disability checks from the government. I want to know how that works in his brain.
(Nevermind being Objectivist and Christian.)

Marcie has a disability, though it is often not a readily visible one. I guess she’d go under “or otherwise.”
