I made a bunch of banner ads.
Advertising is a part of my job that I have almost completely neglected from the very start. I know my career has stalled and suffered because of this lack of attention, but I always get mentally paralyzed when it comes time to design ads since I have little to no understanding of what sorts of things actual human beings would be interested in enough upon viewing to click on.
My comics are about conversations. They consist of layered, multipart, back and forth jokes and I have never understood how to convey that type of humor in a single, often wordless, image. Even worse, is the thought of coming up with a tagline that properly demonstrates why you might want to read my comic.
I’ve finally come to grips with the fact that I am fundamentally overthinking the concept of advertising and missing the point almost entirely. The goal of an ad is to show you SOMETHING (literally anything) that might make you want to see more, learn more, buy more, whatever. Advertising is misleading, by nature because of the time or space with which the advertiser has to get your attention. It’s impossible to truly communicate the benefits of whatever you are trying to sell (in may case it’s internet funny pictures), with a minuscule amount of pixels and seconds in your arsenal. So I gave up. I bit the bullet and I put some characters making weird faces on some ads with the some words that some people might laugh at.
Holy shit… that’s all my comics are.
ADVERTISING PERFECTION ACHIEVED.
