Starscream also turned good at the end of the Marvel Generation 2 comics, due to the influence of the Creation Matrix that he stole. And as for Megatron, he turned benevolent and allied with Optimus Prime for a while during a time of peace while the two were Action Masters over in Japanese continuity. Megatron also kinda wandered off with a change of heart at the end of the Prime cartoon. Plus Megatron WOULD have renounced his evil ways and truce it up with Optimus at the end of Dark of the Moon, but they changed the ending after earlier drafts to the ending we got where Optimus kills him instead of going “well okay.” Both Starscream and Megatron are generally non-evil politicians in TransTech fiction. And, of course, both are good guys in Shattered Glass.
Wait, there was an alternate draft of DOTM that didn’t end with Michael Bay shoving his bullshit post-9-11 definition-of-heroism in our faces?
Oh, wait, that must have been what happened after he saw the script.
“What?! Heroes don’t act like that! They don’t grant their enemies mercy or truces! They perpetuate cycles of violence and hate above all else! Now where’s Megan? I need to sexually humiliate someone.”
The best part of the new ending for me was that the IDW preview comics were seemingly leading up to the original ending. John Barber was writing this story about how Optimus Prime was becoming too bloodthirsty from years of war and Elita-One was trying to pull him back from the edge. The idea, I believe, was to culminate in the original ending of Dark of the Moon, where Optimus would accept Megatron’s offer of a truce, ending the cycle of violence.
But instead, Optimus Prime responded to Megatron’s offer by putting an axe through his head.
So.
Y’know.
Ah-heh.
The cover for the Transformers IDW Chistmas Special is flat out fantastic, but there are two things I really wanted to draw attention to.
