I understand what you’re saying, and I agree that Pegasister is dumb, like we’re somehow adjuncts or special cases. But Brony is gendered too, both in root and in public perception (Wired, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, NPR? Non-male fans are an afterthought to their representations at best, and no one is really bothering to disabuse them of the idea). What started as a clever way to express the idea that anyone, anyone, could watch and enjoy this show, became self-reinforcing.

How many times have you heard the question, “what do we call girl bronies again?” If everyone knew the term was all-inclusive, how would this ever have come up? How would we even have gotten to the point of using Pegasister?

My response to this a few months ago, and it broke my heart to do so, was to stop identifying with this parallel pony fandom entirely. I still watch, enjoy, participate, but if you ask me, I’m a pony fan, or I’m part of the adult female peripheral demo the Hub identifies in the WSJ article. I’m not a Brony or a Pegasister, because what we needed for the start was a word as inclusive as the show’s message was to begin with. A word for male, female, genderqueer, androgynous, every other gender identity, every age, anyone and everyone.

But it’s too late for that now.

This guy is inspired by the stories my pal Graham had been telling us last week at dinner about the My Little Pony forums he was reading.  You know, for his girlfriend.  There’s a really stark tonal contrast between the forums that predate Friendship Is Magic and the ones that arose in response to it.  Someone should do a research paper.

This. THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS. Look, I’m all guys liking FiM. My little brother loves the show! But I’m getting really sick of whining about the toys not being ~show accurate~ (complaining about a MLP having hair you can style is like complaining about a Transformer being able to transform because you don’t like the kibble). And sheesh, it’s not even a year old yet. Pretty dang early to be whining about how Hasbro isn’t ~catering to men~. Because, y’know, men are the default, deified gender, and should be preferred every time.

The sad thing? I really like the plastic ponies, too. I’d love some of the blind bag ones, if they’re ever more readily purchasable. But I still want my rooted hair ponies. The ones you can make your own, and play with more easily. Like any good toy.

tl;dr I’m all for critiquing the toys, they’re far from perfect, but so much of it is male entitlement.

(and please don’t get me started on the comic that called the Luna toy ‘fat,’ because apparently being fat is the first thing a girl can be)

My specific dreams are still to make great entertainment for girls. I just don’t think there’s enough truly good stuff out there for them, but I also have kind of selfish reasons. When I think of something I want to say or an experience I want to share, my ideas are usually innately feminine because I’m female - and I refuse to believe that something being feminine by nature automatically means it isn’t worthwhile. If I can put the tiniest dent in the perception that “girly” equals “lame” or “for girls” equals “crappy,” I’ll be very satisfied.

Remember this, and so much else of what she has to say, the next time someone tells you that the shape of MLP:FiM has nothing to do with feminism. This is feminism in action: striking down the idea that female is less.
