I think it betrays the spirit of this cruise ship storyline thus far for Derek to claim he’s more interested in seeing one thing over another, implying singing is LESS awesome than DANCING, instead of insisting that all things on this cruise ship are equally 100% amazing and perfect and precisely what he wants and needs.

Now, here I disagree, and I think the bolding choices in this circumstance are perfectly logical. The bolded words here highlight the relationship the writer wants to establish between the entities of singing and dancing. SINGING and DANCING themselves are highlighted words, of course, but the values given to them (Derek is OPEN to singing, but he’s MORE interested in dancing) are important to establishing this dichotomy as well.
