I have started and abandoned this post at least a dozen times. Maybe this will be the time that it sticks. I was a little too warm in my jacket and sweater, but I knew that by the time I walked back to my hotel, I’d be happy to have them both, so I pushed up my sleeves a little bit and soldiered on, up the street toward dinner. I was missing my family and my pets, more than I’ve missed them in a…
While plowing through Kickstarter reward fulfillment, I’ve been drawing more Amazi-Girl doodles in the fronts of DoA Book 1s. Today, though, I stopped drawing her with her usual determined grimace or scowl and started drawing her with more of a Dark Knight Returnsish “the rain on my chest is a baptism” kinda grin. It felt more right.
And so I felt like coming upstairs and drawing her a new character model with her “new” grin. I was always kind of lukewarm on the one from earlier this year anyway.
Have it and the other two earlier character models, too, why not. I know this doesn’t mean terribly much, since I always hate the older arts, but I really feel like this new one captures her best. The grin really is that important.
but then i felt like painting clouds so it’s obviously a continuation of the strip that goes into Joyce’s fantasy sunshine world where everyone is Straight and Monogamous and No Sex Allowed (until it’s time to have babies)
ps: please read dumbing of age joyce brown is literally me
Her story goes mostly how the Disney version went, except she didn’t go to war as a quest for self-discovery or because she felt as though she couldn’t make her parents proud. The sole and only reason she disguised herself as a young man was to take her Father’s place in the war.
So when she told her parents that she wanted to this, they were like wtf no you’re a girl and it’s chaotic out there. And you know what she did? She put on male clothes and challenged her own Father to a duel. Her dad was like ‘who the hell are you’ but accepted. When Mulan won and revealed herself as his daughter, he was like wOAH okay you can go. Basically she made sure to get her parent’s consent before going, so not only are her parents awesome, she was decent enough to not leave them hanging for 12 years.
Yes, she was at war for 12 years, but she not in fact meet a handsome general. Instead she BECAMEa general. Eventually the war was won, and the Emperor was so impressed by her he wanted to wed the Princess to her. It was only then that she revealed she was in fact a woman. Then she accepted the rewards and went right back home to her normal life.
There is now even a crater on Venus named after her.
This doesn’t preclude the existence of a historical Mulan, but it does put her in the company of such personages as Arthur Pendragon, Paris, Hector, Moses, Gilgamesh, and other legendary figures that, if they existed at all, were probably so vastly different than their legends that it’s doubtful you could call them the same person.
Is it normal that Prime just never really grabbed me (quit it around the end of Season 2)? It felt to me like it had big tendency to introduce interesting concepts and possibilities and then had them go nowhere and it all just fell kinda dull? Could be because I really got into TF through either Beast War or Animated, can't remember which first, and Beast Wars just had so much mature, risky and interesting stuff going on and Animated was just so fun, felt constantly moving and alive.
since carla’s technically a completely different organism, i felt free to mix up her design a bit
No modifications were made to the lineart itself, unlike some of my other remasterings for convention prints, so I felt okay overwriting the original black-and-white website version here.
I think this is funny and awesome but also, at the same time, I don’t think anybody deserves to be outed. It’s especially sad if clearly the guy getting outed couldn’t cope with homosexuality and felt the need to hate homosexuals - because he clearly has some intense self-loathing going on there - and nobody deserves to be outed, regardless of the situation. I’m right in assuming that this was the dude that was outed, right? He is a piece of work, a really nasty guy, but he clearly has some deeply internalised issues that stem from his own denial of his sexuality and by being outed that isn’t going to solve anything.
Nobody was actually outed. Andrew Shirvell remains a closeted dude who viciously attacked an openly gay student for the audacity of succeeding.
Director of Publishing Matt Moylan is a ComicsGate-style annoying reactionary nerd who complains about how everything isn’t exactly the same as how it was in the ‘80s, and that seems to be the main audience he wants to court. Transformers fans know him as the guy who made “LilFormers,” a comic strip he often used to complain about every little change in the Transformers franchise and call new female characters Mary Sues and stuff like that
It also bugs me how flagrantly horny a lot of Udon’s output is, like the Street Fighter Swimsuit Special that is quite literally just softcore hentai. Believe me when I say I am not anti-horny. If this was a fan zine I wouldn’t bat an eye. But when you’ve got an official Capcom-licensed Street Fighter book out where the cover is literally just a closeup of a sunbathing Chun-Li’s boobs and thighs with her face cropped out… yeah, that rubs me the wrong way. Especially when juxtaposed with Moylan’s personal views, it paints a bad picture
