Something about that interview with the Advocate I posted about this morning has bothered me today and I couldn’t really get my thoughts together until now.

In regards to this statement:

One of the things we’re very focused on doing for these types of stories is rather thann [change an existing] character, we want to make sure that this is the basis of who that character is right from the start.

Yet in this non reboot, reboot you can 

- make a disabled woman walk 
- make everyone younger 
- make Superman’s parents dead again 
- make Superman’s entire marriage disappear 
- make the entire JSA disappear 

But you can’t possibly make an existing character gay.

I find it weird because I feel like they’re presuming that all of their “straight” characters are a 0 on the Kinsey Scale. 100% hetero! And never once has any of their straight dudes or dudettes ever had even one homosexual thought ever. Because the DC universe is 98% straight, 2% gay, and there’s exactly one bisexual lady who has a claw arm? I don’t know. But I don’t think that’s really how sexuality works. That’s not really a good spread. Apparently powerful rings from the center of the galaxy or crime lab chemical spills only land in the laps of 100% hetero folks, as a rule.

The thing is, DC guys, I understand you don’t want to “change” your characters’ sexual orientations. I do! (Even though that’s kind of a real conspicuous line to draw in the sand when you can make Superman’s parents alive or dead depending on what year it is.) But, hey, let’s look at it this way: I’m pretty sure some of these 100% For Real Bros were bi all along, you just haven’t noticed yet. And that’s not really changing, is it? It’s just learning more about a character. You know, like learning Superman’s favorite color.

Or that his entire history is actually totally different from what we’ve been reading for the past 75 years.

But finding out that he once had a thought about dicks, I guess that’s just out of the question.
