Oh no, people don’t like a TV show others enjoy! Quickly, I must duck into yon police box and change into Nerd Man, defending of Nerdom!

But in all seriousness, who cares? Not liking The Big Bang Theory doesn’t make you cool or hip, there are lots of people who don’t care for that show and many who do. By the same token, there are people who don’t like House, Castle, Community, The Office, Parks and Rec, NCIS, and whatever Fox is limping to the barn with on a nightly basis, but you don’t see any of them prancing about on Tumblr like they’re the cock of the walk.

And if you are going to criticize a show, then actually explain why you dislike it, as opposed to just throwing up a macro and adding a “pretty much” or a “this”.

Okay, sure why not. I think I have a spare follower or two. Just a disclaimer: a lot of people that I respect - nerd or not - love this show, and this kind of comedy has its place.

But. 

The Big Bang Theory isn’t full of nerds, it’s full of nerd stereotypes. Are some of the those stereotypes accurate? Sure, yeah, probably. But it has no subtly, no true quirky-ness that actually reflects nerd-dom rather than just grossly caricaturizing it. A sociologist friend of mine has pinned a - rather problematic - word to it, but it is something that sums up my issues with the show with precision: “nerd-face”.

Let’s frame it like this.

My husband and I went to visit one side of our family one Christmas. They are all very lovely people, but they are not, have not been, and will never be nerds. We, however, are nerds, and our reputation proceeds us. So naturally when we came over, they tried to bond with us over a recent copy of the BBT that they’d given one of their kids. They were totally shocked when we said we didn’t really like it. 

“But I don’t like Sheldon,” I explained. “I kind of want to punch him in the face.” (Christ, Sheldon made me hate math for a second during one of his jokes)

The family laughed and said, “Of course, isn’t that the point?”

…. no. I’m sorry but a TV show that makes you hate the main character who represents another larger - outsider - group as a whole?

No. That shouldn’t be the point.

Whether or not that’s what the show intends is beside the issue - it is putting that out there. Seriously, nerds are way more subtle and interesting and just … guh. It’s boring, cheap, trite, and easy. 

Kind of like your mom.
